National Service Scheme (NSS)

National Service Scheme (NSS) was introduced in 1969 with the primary objective of developing the personality and character of the student youth through voluntary community service. ‘Education through Service’ is the purpose of the NSS. The birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi, in 37 universities involving 40000 students. NSS is an extension dimension to the higher education system to orient the student youth to community service while they are studying in educational institutions. It is being implemented by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.

About Department

The National Service Scheme was introduced in India on September 24 in the year 1969 and implemented from 1970 through out the country. Shri RLT College of Science, Akola was established in the year 1970 and from the beginning the NSS Unit is there in the college. Principal of the college, Dr. V. D. Nanoty had taken the charge as NSS Programme Officer in the year 1991. With devotion and dedication he nurtured and Flourished the NSS Unit for 12 years. After this long tenure he was appointed as NSS District coordinator and successfully honoured the post for 6 years. Principal of the college, respected Dr. V. D. Nanoty is Member of N.S.S. Advisory Committee, S.G.B. Amravati University, Amravati from last 4 years. From 1991 the Unit organizes Special Camps every year with many regular activities for wellbeing of society at the adopted village. He was Awarded as State Level Best Programme Officer and best NSS Unit for the year 1999-2000. Under his guidance many teachers of the college worked as NSS Program Officers and proved pillars to strengthen the entire NSS Unit till date today.

Aims & Objectives

  1. To understand the community in which they work;
  2. To understand themselves in relation to their community;
  3. To identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process.
  4. To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility;
  5. To utilise their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems;
  6. To develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities:
  7. To gain skills in mobilising community participation;
  8. To acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude;
  9. To develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters; and
  10. To practice national integration and social harmony

Motto of NSS

The ideological orientation of the NSS is inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. Very appropriately, the motto of NSS is “NOT ME, BUT YOU”. An NSS volunteer places the ‘community’ before ‘self’.
