About Department

The department of Microbiology, established in 1983, has been recognized as the “Best Department” by the Microbiologist’s Society, India. The department offers UG,PG, and PhD programs in Microbiology along with other career-oriented programs such as CCLT and DCLT. It commits to advanced academic environment and enhancing social responsibilities and awareness of students. The department of Microbiology believes in hands-on learning and is well equipped with instruments and experienced faculty.

The department has excellent curricular and extra-curricular accomplishments and consistently thrives to increase its credentials. Since its establishment, the department has the practice of producing merits in university examinations. The department also boasts of its exceptional alumni who have received global success and still find their roots in the department.

Beginning

The department was pioneered by Dr. Y.A. Ali, Dr.U.K. Bhalekar, and Dr. V.D. Nanoty, who established the experiential learning culture and worked devotedly for the upliftment of the subject and department. Dr. V.D. Nanoty, who chairs as the Principal since 2008, continues to be the strongest pillar in promoting Microbiology at university and national level. He extends his support in all academic and social activities of the department. He is currently the chairman of board of studies for Biochemistry including Microbiology and Food Science of SGB Amravati University, Amravati. He is supervisor for PhD in microbiology. Under his guidance, 8 students have received Ph.D. till date, whereas 4 students are working to attain the doctorate degree. He has been appointed by SGB Amravati University, Amravati as resource person for CBCS implementation workshops. Dr. Y. A. Ali later continued imparting education in Jazan University, Saudi Arabia while Dr. U.K. Bhalekar retired in 2020.

Progression

The department started offering PG Microbiology program from 2011 and PhD program from 2003. The department also started career-oriented programs, namely CCLT and DCLT in 2006, which the students could pursue along with the three-year UG program.

Current Status

As the department advanced, the leadership was passed to Dr. Harish S. Malpani, who continues to bring new glory to the department with his innovative ideas and pedagogical skills. He is an authorized master trainer of effective teaching by enquiry-based pedagogical tools and key principles of National Education Policy2020. He has been appointed by SGB Amravati University, Amravati as resource person for CBCS implementation workshops. He is also a member of district Biodiversity board Akola, constituted by Government of Maharashtra and works for creating environment consciousness amongst students and society.

Ms. Sonali Gawande efficiently works in the department and brings novel ideas. The students of the department have excelled in many areas of occupations as well. The department is progressing in leaps and bounds in terms of education and infrastructure.
